NAUI Scuba Diving Swim Test?
Ok so im taking a scuba diving class being offered at my school. To continue the class, we have to pass three tests: Dead man's float for 10 minutes, swim 50 feet on one breath of air, and then swim 300 yards(275 meters, 6 pool laps to and from) in 9 minutes. With the 300 yard swim, we are not allowed to use goggles or a snorkel and cannot swim on our backs. Needless to say, I passed the first two but failed the third. I get another chance to take and pass the test later today. I would like to know:
1. Is there supposed to be a time limit for the 300 yard swim?
2. Is the criteria for our 300 yard swim what NAUI follows for its swim tests?
3. Does anyone have any tips for how I can swim faster to make my time while using less energy so that I am not as exhausted?
--I really need to pass this swim test so any swim tips would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
The Standards and Proceedures for NAUI are designed to be used as a guideline. Off the top of my head, I believe that for an openwater certification the standard is 225 yards with out a time limit. And it can be done with any stroke that you'd like. As long as you maintain forward progress. I do not believe there is a time limit for anything prior to rescue diver. / That being said, instructors are allowed to / and use higer standards than the minimum. (for example, we use 60 feet under water) You may be able to find another instructor/class that does not use the 300 in 9 citeria.
However, your best bet is to raise your swimming ability as it will make diving more comfortable. You may be able to do a modified side stroke. --- you would put one arm out if front of you, (lets say your left arm) do an over head stroke with your right arm while you kick. This keeps your face more or less out of the water which is usually part of the issue. The best way to get better is to get time in the pool. It does take some practice.
Good luck!
